The Fundación Joan Miró, in collaboration with Obra Social La Caixa, announced on December 2 that the winner of the Fifth Joan Miró Contemporary Art Award was artist Ignasi Aballí (Barcelona, 1958). This recognition is granted to artists with prominent artistic trajectories. The jury panel was formed by Alfred Pacquement, Director of the Centre Pompidou in Paris; Vicent Todolí, former director of Tate Modern in London; Poul Erik Tøjner, Director of the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art; Nimfa Bisbe, Director of the Colección de Arte Contemporáneo Fundación La Caixa; and Rosa Malet, Director of the Fundación Miró. The jury noted in their decision that "The innovation and creative freedom present in the works by Aballí are qualities that also characterized the artistic work of Joan Miró." Likewise, the jury stated that Aballí's work, "developed for over 30 years in various mediums, is known for its powerful subtlety and for favoring the recovery and reactivation of the most invisible and ignored elements of our environment." A recognition granted every two years, the Award offers a purse of 70,000.00 euros and the production of an anthological exhibition that will be initially presented at the Fundación Joan Miró and then at several venues of La Caixa. Acording to Ignasi Aballí: "Winning this award gives me great joy and represents an important stimulus that will allow me to carry out projects that have been waiting their chance" and adds that "I have not had time to think about the exhibition, but it will not be a retrospective. There will be many new works and those pieces that already exist will be for the most part updated in relation to the space."
