Identidad femenina en la colección IVAM

IVAM, the Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno, presents Identidad femenina en la colección IVAM at the Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales in Montevideo.

The exhibition will be open to the public through September 30, 2013, and was curated by Consuelo Ciscar, director of IVAM, and Barbara Rose, historian and art critic.

Identidad femenina en la colección IVAM at the Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales in Montevideo brings together 52 works by 43 female artists of the Twentieth and Twenty-First centuries.

The proposal of focusing on one gender is intended to "vindicate its identity." Although the artists and works in this exhibition range widely in temporal, technical, and thematic terms, there is one communicating thread among them, revealing a common material and formal quest. The results are new artistic languages responding to discoveries made from a female perspective.

According to the director of IVAM, the goal of the show is "to serve as a tribute extensive to each and every woman who dared trespass on terrains —artistic, scientific, political, academic, etc.— previously barred to them, and also to become a platform for greater awareness in society and an intensified defense of women's rights in wherever they are threatened across the globe."

Among the artists included in the show are Carmen Calvo, Mónica Capucho, Elena del Rivero, Sonia Delaunay, Katharina Fritsch, Cristina García Rodero, Jacinta Gil, Susy Gómez, Roberta González, Cristina Iglesias, Carmen Laffon, Eva Lootz, Ariane Lopez-Huici, Cristina Lucas, Ángeles Marco, Rita Martorell, Blanca Muñoz, Natividad Navalón, Aurélie Nemours, Ouka Leele, Vanessa Pastor, Ana Peters, Barbara Schwartz, Soledad Sevilla, Cindy Sherman, Laurie Simmons, Susana Solano, Mar Solís, Grete Stern, Rosella Vasta, Rocío Villalonga, and Sue Williams.

The show is presented in collaboration with Acción Cultural Española —AC/E—the Embassy of Spain in Uruguay, the Generalitat Valenciana, the Department of Education and Culture, and the National Directorate of Culture, and is supported by the organization Women Together.
