1st Latin American Photography Award

The Centro Latinoamericano de Fotografía (www.clafoto.com) announces the first edition of its Latin American Photography Award. The competition will distribute US$5,000 in prize money; the jury, comprised of renowned Latin American professionals, will be headed by René Burri, former president of Magnum France and well known for his portraits of Che Guevara and Picasso, as well as his book The Germans.

The award will have 11 categories: Environment; Customs and Popular Culture; Urban and Rural Landscapes; Work, Science; and Education; Everyday Life; a General category, open to any topic; Portraiture; Architecture; Photo-journalism; Sports; and Nature and Wildlife.

Participation is open to professional or amateur photographers born in any Latin American nation, regardless of their current place of residence, and to foreigners with at least 5 years of continued residence in the region.

A selection committee comprised of specialists in the photographic and documentary medium, will select works for an exhibition to be held in December, 2012 at the Centro Cultural Borges in Buenos Aires. From the works selected, the Jury helmed by René Burri will select a First Prize winner (US$3,000), a Second Prize (US$ 1,500), and Third Prize (US$500 in photographic equipment), and any mentions it sees fit.

The Centro Latinoamericano de Fotografía has as its goal the promotion of photography in the region through the construction of an environment in which professional and amateur photographers, regardless of their place of residence, can present their works, participate in salons and competitions, gain access to courses and seminars, or be included in exhibitions.

In sum, the objective is to generate alternatives that contribute to the development of their artistic careers, be it for established practitioners or new talents.
