The 1st Biennial of Architecture, Art and Landscape of the Canaries, organized by the government of the Canaries, will take place in different spaces in the seven islands, between November 27th 2006 and February 10th 2007. The Canaries Biennial is directed by Rosina Gomez-Baeza and has the delegated international curator, Antonio Zaya, in the artistic section, with the collaboration of the Art historian Clara Muñoz; and a Scientific Committee in the architectural ambit. The committee has been designed to attend to the singularities of the Canary¿s space, with the objective of finding solutions that preserve the natural spaces. More that 70 artists and as many architects and theorists, proceeding principally from America, Africa and Europe, shared throughout almost three months the insular geography to confront solutions for these problems. The Biennial plans to analyse a series of themes that are of concern for society which include, among others, the population increase, the model and resources of the occupation of land, public space, cultural diversity, migratory movements, the landscape, and communication. The Art section of the Biennial, commissioned by Antonio Zaya, proposes to reflect on a series of questions of current relevance: natural elements and energies, archaeology and memory, and migrations. It also includes the organisation of the 1st International Africa, America and Europe Symposium under the name Art and Social Landscape, around sustainable culture. Throughout these conferences that develop between November 27th and December 1st in La Laguna University, the vocation of the Canary Islands as a tri-continental platform and the role of the archipelago with respect to these territories, that will be personified through a significant representation of contemporary art will be analysed. The Architecture section will include from an exhibition and a seminar in Gran Canaria with an interesting staff of architects, made up of projects that approach thematics related to the growth, limits, resources and models, criteria of intervention, preservation and articulation. The Biennial of Architecture, Art and Landscape will publish three principal publications, the Guide to the Biennial, the Official Catalogue and the Book of Acts.
