"I Am a Stranger, and I Am Moving" by Rodrigo Hernández

Through September 24, 2022, the Swiss Institute of Contemporary Art in New York presents the exhibition "I Am a Stranger, and I Am Moving" by Mexican artist Rodrigo Hernández.
In homage to the queer poets who have lived in and around New York's East Village, artist Rodrigo Hernández presents "I Am a Stranger, and I Am Moving," a series of drawings inspired by their words. The illustrations, which are loose interpretations of lines by writers such as Andrea Abi-Karam, WH Auden, Federico Garcia Lorca, Allen Ginsberg, John Giorno, Ugaz Left Wind, June Jordan, Jaime Manrique, Eileen Myles, and David Wojnarowicz, have been transformed into a sidewalk installation at the Astor Place North Plaza. The selected poems speak intimately of these artists' lives in the neighborhood: of falling in love, crying, experiencing dreams, heartaches, or revelations here. They are testimonies of personal experiences of this place that become shared through poetry and now, drawing.
In the Reading Room of the Swiss Institute of Contemporary Art, Hernandez's original drawings and the poetry that inspired them will be on view.
This exhibition is presented by the New York City Department of Transportation Art Program in partnership with the Swiss Institute and the Village Alliance.
