Hugo Zapata, Emblematic Monument

The work by Hugo Zapata titled Canto (Song) was awarded in recent days First Prize at the "Searching for an Emblematic Monument Alfonso Bonilla Aragón Airport." The jury panel was formed by: Eduardo Serrano-Rueda, John Castles-Gil, Aldo Marcelo Hurtado-Mora, Juan Martin Caicedo-Ferrer and the public vote. Following a meeting to deliberate at the Cámara Colombiana de la Infraestructura Seccional Valle, in Cali, the jury announced that their decision was based on "the highly artistic content found in the work Canto and the contemporary sculpture values that it reflects. Likewise, the decision was based on the geographical and natural aspects of the Cauca Valley reflected by the pure geometric abstraction used to convey its mountain range, the Cauca River and the Samanes. Another factor taken into account was the successful manner in which the work's design established a formal and conceptual relationship with the airport's architecture. And, lastly, the way in which the piece showcases the natural condition of the materials used without artifice, guaranteeing its durability through time." According to Hugo Zapata, "Canto evokes the tops of the saman trees and the mountain range that frames the Cauca Valley. A crystal that horizontally cuts the sculpture is reminiscent of the Cauca River. The iron oxide used in the final finish of the piece reminds us of the large extensions of land that give life to the Valley and its agricultural purpose. The aerial form of the sculpture references airplanes. In synthesis, the work is defined by the surrounding natural environment and a pure geometry that emerges happily and freely through the work's multiple visuals." Canto will be installed in a space assigned by the Alfonso Bonilla Aragón Airport, Aerocali S.A., the concessionary in charge of the aerial terminal. The characteristics of the piece and its location will allow promoting the very identity of the Cauca Valley. The work is expected to become emblematic of the region. It is important to note that the Selection Jury praised the participation of the competing artists and the quality of their works. Special mentions were also granted by the jury to the following works: •Entre Dos Cordilleras (Between Two Mountain Ranges) by Freddy Pantoja •Alas (Wings) by Carlos Blanco •Arrebato (Outburst) by Gustavo Niño •Zafra (Sugar Harvest) by the group formed by artists Andrés Felipe Salazar-Valencia and Mario Orbes •Rasgos Comunes (Common Traits) by the group formed by artists: Pablo Buitrago, Jessica Parra-Martínez, Rubén Ortiz, Danna Yael Mazorra, Didier Soret-Mosquera, and Gustavo Salazar-Cosme.
