On June 26 of this year, the Fundación Príncipe de Girona presented its 2014 Awards in the context of the IMPLUSA Forum, in a ceremony presided over by the King and Queen of Spain. The Prince of Girona 2014 Arts and Letters Award (individual) was granted to Asturian artist Hugo Fontela, who becomes the first visual artist to receive the Award, given that the recognition was only offered to writers and musicians in previous editions. The jury's decision was unanimous and, according to its members, was based, on one hand, on the quality of Fontela's work and, on the other, on "the reflective and essential nature of works that also reveal a commitment to defending the natural world that surrounds us." This award is directed to talented young artists with promising works in any discipline in the fields of arts and letters that serves as inspiration to younger generations. The award consists of a purse of 10,000 euros and the reproduction of a work by artist Juan Muñoz. Hugo Fontela (Austria, 1986) traveled to New York at the age of 18 and began his academic training at The Students League. Fontela has won several recognitions, among them, the 20th BMW Painting Award (2005) and the Best Artists Award from the ESTAMPA Graphic Art Fair (2007). Throughout his career Fontela has participated in several exhibitions, the most prominent among them include: his collaboration with Juan Hidalgo for the 18th Painting Biennial of Zamora (2006), an exhibition at the Museo de la Abadía de Montserrat in Barcelona, in which he presented some of the works created in America. He completed two stays with architect Oscar Niemeyer in Río de Janeiro (2009 and 2011), and presented the exhibition Niemeyer by Fontela at the Centro Niemeyer in Avilés. The Fundación Príncipe de Girona (FPdGi) yearly grants the Fundación Príncipe de Girona Awards aimed at recognizing the artistic trajectory of young creators between the ages of 16 and 35, as well as promoting and disseminating initiatives and efforts, scientific research and artistic creativity and solidarity, and developing the talents of enterprising and innovative young creators that demonstrate a desire to build a fairer world in a globalized environment, and who can also demonstrate their risk-taking abilities and a drive to induce social change. The award is also aimed at organizations that stand out for their entrepreneurial and innovative abilities.
