On January 12, 2012, poets and writers from the Instituto Nicaragüense de Cultura Hispánica (INCH) paid tribute to Nicaraguan painter Armando Morales (1927-2011) at the Centro Cultural de España in Nicaragua. Sergio Ramírez Mercado, a personal friend of the artist and collector of Morales´ work, as well as art critic Jorge Eduardo Arellano, UCA (Universidad Centroamericana), professor María Dolores Torres and the poet Julio Valle Castillo, hosted the event. In 1954, Morales received the Joaquín Díaz Award during the 2nd Spanish-American Biennial in Havana. In 1956, he participated in the Central-American Painting Competition celebrated in Guatemala, and was awarded First Prize for his work entitled Árbol-Espanto (Tree-Fright). In 1959, Morales won the Ernest Wolf Award at the Fifth São Paulo Biennial (Brazil) as Best Latin American Artist and, in 1960, he received the Fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.
