Henry Moore – Art on the Street

Aimed at developing exhibitions that allow for the approach, knowledge and integration of works of art presented to different publics, the outdoor museum created an Art on the Street program that since 2006 has exhibited works by contemporary artists like Manolo Valdés and Igor Mitoraj and by modern artists like Augustine Rodin. Continuing with an initiative to bring art to the citizenry to a space different than the walls of museums and exhibition halls, the city of Bilbao will host the exhibition entitled Henry Moore. Art on the Street at the Parque de Doña Casilda Iturrizar. The exhibition will consist of seven monumental bronze sculptures created by Henry Moore (Castleford, 1898 – Much Hadham, 1986) at the peak of his artistic career, between the years 1960 and 1982. The exhibition was organized by the Fundación Henry Moore, in collaboration with the local government in Bilbao. The sculptures showcase the most representative characteristics of Henry Moore's oeuvre: a fascination for the reclined figure and "mother and son" themes, his exploration of the relationships between the human figure and the landscape (urban and rural); the tensions between the natural and the abstract, and the transformation of natural objects into sculptural forms. Henry Moore is one of the great masters of modern sculpture. After the age of 40 he achieved great international recognition for his monumental bronze sculptures exhibited as public art in different places around the world. Some of such pieces include: North Wind (1928), located outside the London Underground offices at St. James's Park; Madonna and Child (1949) in Claydon Church, Suffolk (1949), and Reclined Figure (1958), at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
