The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey (MARCO) presents “Helen Escobedo: Ambientes Totales,” an exhibition curated by Lucía Sanromán and Paloma Gómez Puente. Helen Escobedo (1934-2010) is a pioneer in installation art in Mexico; since the ‘60s she created revolutionary abstract geometric sculptures. Her immersive sculptures invite the spectator to break the wall of art contemplation; she conceives her production as a “total ambiance” where the spectator can transit through the work of art.
The show “Helen Escobedo: Ambientes totales” reunites 108 Escobedo’s oeuvres, divided in four curatorial axes: “Habitando la geometría”, “Paisajes verticales”, “Contra monumentos a lo cotidiano” and “Los mojados son los nombres dados.” These axes represent a journey in Escobedo’s artistic production from 1969 to 2010. It is important to point out the presence in this exhibition of “Corredor Blanco” (Pasaje Blanco) (1969), an ephemeral installation that provokes a living geometry for the spectator by creating a corridor through white frames arranged sequentially. This installation is emblematic of Escobedo’s production since it was her first ephemeral and immersive installation.
“Helen Escobedo: Ambientes Totales” will be on view until December 31, 2022, at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey (MARCO).
