Harry Chávez: Donde muerde el mito (Where the Myth Bites)

The Museo de Arte de Lima (MALI) inaugurates Harry Chávez. Donde muerde el mito (Harry Chávez. Where the Myth Bites), the first exhibition of the Peruvian artist at its facilities. In this exhibition, Chávez (Lima, 1978) explores the symbolic confrontation between the serpent and the feline, recurring elements in Andean and Amazonian mythologies, to address themes such as conflict, transformation, and resistance.

Through works like Deadly Leap and Birth of the Dragon, the artist presents high-tension scenes where these natural forces do not seek domination, but rather aim to restore an unstable balance. Beyond the animal realm, Chávez uses these figures to allude to contested territories, collective memories, and the social dynamics that shape our existence.

The exhibition is part of the MALI Collections program. Contemporary Interventions, an initiative that fosters dialogue between contemporary artists and the thematic axes of the museum's permanent collection. In his pieces, Chávez offers a contemporary take on mythology, inviting the viewer to reflect on transformation and hybridity.

Harry Chávez won second prize in the Curatorial Competition for the Peruvian Pavilion at the 2024 Venice Art Biennale, first place in the III National Painting Contest of the Banco Central de Reserva del Perú, and third prize in the XI Art Competition Pasaporte para un Artista at the French Embassy. His work has been exhibited in various cities around the world and explores the mythical and symbolic universe of Andean-Amazonian civilization, blending contemporary techniques with elements of Peruvian cultural tradition.

The exhibition will be open for viewing until December 14, 2025.
