Guerrilla Girls 1985-2015

Curated by Xabier Araskistain, the exhibition entitled Guerrilla Girls 1985-–2015 is a retrospective that celebrates 30 years of artistic trajectory by the US feminist art group Guerrilla Girls. The exhibition will be on display at the contemporary art center Matadero Madrid until April 26. The exhibition includes works created by Guerrilla Girls since June 14,1984, when they met at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA) to protest against an exhibition in which only 13 of the 169 artists participating were women. Thirty years later, they continue to denounce through performances and posters the small presence of women artists in the art world. The exhibition showcases emblematic posters displayed in chronological order and immersed in a dialog with documents—publications, t-shirts, correspondence, among others—that generate a context that informs viewers about the history and the production processes of the group. According to Xabier Araskistain "The work by Guerrilla Girls reminds us of the various political objectives that were not attained by the feminist of the 1960s and 1970s and invites us to continue the struggle to achieve them. Guerrilla Girls 1985–2015 also includes the documentary titled Guerillas in Our Midst, created by Amy Harrison in 1992, as well as an interview with Xabier Araskistain. Guided and educational visits are offered on Saturdays by women artists that belong to the MAVeducaAV.
