The exhibition that was originally going to be held in September 2020 was scheduled for March 2021. The retrospective at Gropius Bau, Berlin, will be the first in Germany dedicated to the 91-year-old Japanese artist's work. It is a space of 3000 square meters that will offer a complete vision of significant creative periods in an 80 years trajectory.
The main focus is on taking a tour around Kusama's work from her early paintings, sculptures and installations, and lesser-known activities in Germany and Europe. Stephanie Rosenthal curated the show in close collaboration with Yayoi Kusama and her studio. And later, it will travel to the Ludwig Museum, in Cologne; and the Fondation Beyeler, in Basel.
