Gregory Vorbe

Gregory Vorbe was born February 14th 1966. He lives and works in Haiti. As a young child, he displayed a penchant for painting, which was encouraged by his cousin J-C Castera, reputed Haitian artist, who allowed him to paint under his supervision.
As a Catholic child growing up in the Haitian bourgeoisie, the general portrayal of voodoo is negative and evil...this did not impede Gregory from wondering about the meaning of the beautiful verves( sacred symbols representing the various lwas, gods and spirits of the voodoo pantheon) he saw...he was also fascinated by the raras, musical group on foot that comes out during carnival season and Easter...the haunting sound of the bamboo or vaksin playing throughout the night, along with singing and chanting, had a profound influence on his imagination, nurturing a desire to know more about his country's roots and main, but hidden religion, voodoo, with it's gods, spirits, rituals, mysteries and of course, art and music..Rythms... drums...Nago..Ibo...Congo...Dahomey....Banda....etc...all tracing back to Africa...
Influenced by the Caribbean movements, Gregory mixed American Indian and African traditions to paint. He participated in different exhibitions from 1990 until now. In 1996, he participated at the "Biennale of international art" in Cuenca in Equador. In 1999 he was part of an internos project in Santiego, Cuba.
