Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide has been awarded the 2025 Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts, as announced on Monday by the Princess of Asturias Foundation. The jury, chaired by Miguel Zugaza Miranda, highlighted Iturbide’s contribution to photographic art, emphasizing her ability to capture the human essence through a poetic and documentary lens.
Born in Mexico City in 1942, Iturbide began her artistic career in film. However, her encounter with photographer Manuel Álvarez Bravo marked a decisive shift toward photography. Since then, her internationally acclaimed work has focused on portraying social and cultural realities, particularly within Mexico’s Indigenous communities. Her photographs have been exhibited in major institutions such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
Throughout her career, Iturbide has received numerous honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, Mexico’s National Prize for Sciences and Arts, and the Lucie Award. Her black-and-white work ranges from portraiture to landscapes and is often described by critics as a fusion of reality and myth.
The Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts recognizes outstanding achievements in fields such as architecture, music, film, dance, painting, and photography.
