Graciela Iturbide, Recipient of the 2017 Alcobendas International Photography Award

In recent days, Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide was announced as winner of the fifth edition of the Alcobendas International Photography Award, becoming the first Latin American to receive this recognition. The jury unanimously recognized Iturbide for "the firm and clear manner in which she approaches the sociocultural themes in Mexican culture in its entire dimension, through compelling narratives that are intimate, magical and, above all, sincere." Consisting of a purse of 10,000.00 euros, the award recognizes the work of a photographer created in recent years while also taking into account the excellence of his/her professional trajectory. The winners of past editions are: US photographer and president of Magnum Photo, Alex Webb (2009 recipient), Spanish photographer Cristina García-Rodero (2011 recipient), US photographer Philip-Lorca diCorcia (2013 recipient), and Madrid-based French photographer Pierre Gonnord (2015 recipient). For this 2017 edition of the event, the jury panel was formed by Juan Manuel Castro-Prieto (recipient of Spain's 2015 National Photography Award), Pablo Juliá (former director of the Centro Andaluz de la Fotografía), Laura Revuelta (editor-in-chief of ABC Cultural), Marga Sánchez (collector), José María Díaz-Maroto (curator of the Colección de Fotografía Alcobendas), Belén Poole-Quintana (director of the Centro de Arte Alcobendas), Yolanda Sanchís (director of the Patronato Socio Cultural del Ayuntamiento de Alcobendas), and Ignacio García de Vinuesa (mayor of Alcobendas). In addition to the award, a monographic exhibition featuring Iturbide's work will be shown in 2018 at the Centro de Arte Alcobendas, in the Community of Madrid. Graciela Iturbide portrays the everyday lives of Mexico's indigenous cultures, particularly women's. Iturbide has exhibited her work in solo shows in venues like the Centre Pompidou (1982), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1990), the Philadelphia Museum of Art (1997), the Paul Getty Museum (2007), the Fundación MAPFRE (2009), the Photography Museum Winterthur (2009), and the Barbican Art Gallery (2012), among others. Some of the other recognitions that Iturbide has received during her artistic career include: the Grand Prize Mois de la Photo, Paris (1988); the Guggenheim Fellowship, for her 1988 project "Party and Death;" Hugo Erfurth Award (1989), in Leverküsen, Germany; the 1990 International Grand Prize, in Hokkaido, Japan; the 2008 Hasselblad Award; the 2008 National Prize for Arts and Sciences, in Mexico City; a 2008 Honorary Degree in Photography from the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago; and a 2009 Honorary Doctorate of Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute.
