Glenda León exhibits at the Museo Extremeño e Iberoamericano de Arte Contemporáneo

Música de las Formas (Music of the Forms) is the title of the solo exhibition of the Cuban artist Glenda León (1976) at the Museo Extremeño e Iberoamericano de Arte Contemporáneo (MEIAC), and is part of the cycle La Expresión Americana (The American Expression) curated by the philosopher José Jiménez.
The exhibition brings together an important set of works where music, understood in a broader concept, is articulated with forms to take possession as a metaphorical thread. In the words of the curator: “And on that horizon, the forms of Glenda León’s sound take us visually to the deepest of the poetic knowledge: sky, flower, mirror, stars, clouds, the political world, flow, and forms of time, tears… universe, here and in the heavens, as the music of forms.”
The exhibition is a selective journey through more than 20 years of the creator’s career, including works shown for the first time — some made during Madrid’s lockdown. Among the works that make it up, we can find Cielo, an installation specially adapted for 18 meters of museum walls. This panopticon construction was a prison during the Franco regime and housed hundreds of political prisoners. Cada Flor es una Forma del Tiempo IV is made up of 200 natural roses and one artificial and, in this way, underlines the ephemeral element of existence. Estrellas Masticadas, formed by chewing gums with which León comments on the transformation of waste and other universes’ creation. En Tres Tiempos, where she philosophically explores the “value” that human beings give to life; and La Internacional IV, where she references the musical notes of the well-known anthem of The Communist International with banknotes from all over the world.
Música de las Formas (Music of the Forms) is open to the public until March 31, 2021. For more information, visit: http://meiac.es/exhibiciones/glenda-len-31/
