Graphic Turn. Like the Ivy on the Wall

Until October 13, 2022, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia presents "Giro gráfico. Como en el muro la hidra," the outcome of an extended collective research process conducted by the Southern Conceptualisms Network in collaboration with the Museo Reina Sofía.
The exhibition proposes a journey through the graphic initiatives that, from the 1960s to the present, have confronted politically oppressive contexts in Latin America. Articulating strategies of transformation and resistance that have radically changed the ways of doing, establishing intersubjective links, building communities, and even the very circulation of graphic supports.
The exhibition brings together a wide selection of pieces that quickly and efficiently circulated outside the field of art, from diverse origins and latitudes, which have in common the precariousness of the components and the media, as well as their graphic and distribution potential. Thus, indigenous rights movements, memory struggles for victims of dictatorships in Chile, Argentina, Peru, and Uruguay, and queer activism or feminism intertwine and rise as producers of posters and banners, T-shirts, interventions in the urban space, performances, or street actions, which make up a complex set of experiences crossed by ties of solidarity, affinity, and influence between the various countries involved.
"Como en el muro la hiedra" refers to a verse from the song "Volver a los diecisiete" by Chilean singer-songwriter Violeta Parra, which inspired this research. Graphic art grows on walls and, like ivy, continually puts out shoots because, in this cyclical time, things did not happen simply in the past but continue to happen, crossing and moving.
Coordinating team Red Conceptualismos del Sur: Ana Longoni (Argentina), Tamara Díaz (Cuba), André Mesquita (Brazil), Guillermina Mongan (Argentina) and Sylvia Suárez (Colombia).
The exhibition will travel to the Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (MUAC), Mexico City (November 2022 - July 2023).
