PhotoEspaña, the international festival of photography and contemporary art celebrated every summer in Madrid, has reached its 20th edition. As part of the activities to celebrate this milestone, the festival wished to recognize the work of institutions, sponsors, and professionals that have contributed to the development of the event. For this reason, the organizers of the festival awarded twenty "20th Anniversary Medals" to public institutions—including the Casa Real and the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports—sponsors, and organizations like the Fundación Telefónica, as well as to curators and directors like Gerardo Mosquera, the only Spanish national to receive the recognition. Mosquera served as artistic director of PhotoEspaña between 2011 and 2013 and has curated several international exhibitions for the festival. Since its inception in 1998, PhotoEspaña has been conceived as a festival created from society. In the twenty editions of the festival, more than one hundred public institutions and over four hundred public and private organizations have participated in the project.
