The important Japanese award, considered one of the most prestigious awards for the arts, recently announced the list of winners in the different categories. In Painting, it went to the French artist Sophie Calle; in Sculpture, to the Colombian Doris Salcedo; in Architecture, to the Japanese Shigeru Ban, known for his designs of institutions such as the Pompidou-Metz Center and the Aspen Art Museum; in Music it went to Maria João Pires (Portugal/Switzerland), a talented classical pianist; and in Theater/Film it went to Ang Lee, from Taiwan and director of the film Brokeback Mountain.
The artists are recognized and awarded for their international achievements in the arts and their role in enriching the global community. Each recipient receives 15 million yen, approximately $105,000. Prince Hitachi, Honorary Patron of the Japan Art Association, will present a medal at the ceremony to be held in Tokyo on November 19, 2024.
