Gabriela Sáenz-Shelby is the new General Director of TEOR/ética and Lado V. She holds a Master's Degree in History, with honors, from the University of Costa Rica. From 2006 to 2008 she was the Director of the Museo de Arte Costarricense and one of the organizers and curators of Las posibilidades de la Mirada, a series of exhibitions held at the museum between 2003 and 2007 which represented a radical renewal of approaches to the historical evolution of the arts in Costa Rica.
Sáenz-Shelby's investigations on the emergence, evolution, and current situation of art collections and museums in Costa Rica are an exceptional contribution to the study of the country's art history and cultural policies. With her appointment to the post of General Director, TEOR/ética remains loyal to its original avocation to bring together art and thought in order to understand and foster contemporary artistic practices in Central America and the Caribbean region. Gabriela Sáenz-Shelby assumed her post on June 24th.
Since its reopening in February of 2012, TEOR/ética has presented several critical curatorial projects, as well as a sustained program of talks, debates, projections, workshops, and seminars.
The Foundation's museum, named Lado V - Centro de Investigación Virginia Pérez-Ratton, was also reconfigured. This "new" space, which hosts TEOR/ética's archives, an open library specialized in contemporary art, and exhibition galleries, is intended to promote the activation of a dynamic and experimental center for the documentation, research, and development of artistic and curatorial practices in Central America and the Caribbean.
