Gabriel Orozco

On recent days, Americas Society granted the first Americas Society Cultural Achievement Award in recognition of the outstanding creativity and talent of central figures in the visual arts of Latin America. This year the award went to Mexican artist Gabriel Orozco, in recognition of his artistic excellence and contribution to the creation of an artistic language of global reach that emerged from contemporary Latin American art. The Americas Society Cultural Achievement Award was given to Orozco in a private ceremony. It consists of a statuette created by Mexican designer Ariel Rojo. The funds collected from the award ceremony will go to support Americas Society's mission to promote visual arts, music and literature from the Americas among a diverse public in the United States. "As we prepare to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of our organizations in 2015, the creation of the first Americas Society Cultural Achievement Award reaffirms our commitment to showcase and support culture in the hemisphere," said Americas Society and Council of the Americas President and CEO Susan Segal. "Gabriel Orozco is a truly worthy recipient of this very important recognition." The work by Gabriel Orozco (Mexico, 1962) covers a wide array of mediums including drawing, installation, photography, sculpture and video. Orozco lives and works in New York, Mexico City and Paris.
