Gabriel Orozco

The Centre Georges Pompidou will exhibit for the first time the work by Gabriel Orozco, in an overview of this Mexican artist's oeuvre¿photography, sculpture, drawing, painting, and sculpture¿that will remain open until January 2011. This retrospective examines two decades of work, with more than 80 pieces that convey Orozco's free and fluent wanderings back and forth between drawing, photography, sculpture, installation, and painting, in order to create a heterogeneous body of work that rejects categorization. These are works that collectively reflect an artistic career currently based in Mexico, New York, and Paris. Although Orozco created each object as an answer to a specific occasion or place, the context of this exhibition confers new resonance to each of them. Thus, seemingly unrelated works enter into a dialogue based on shared motivations and methodologies. The exhibition presents works like Mis Manos son Mi Corazón (My Hands Are My Heart, 1991), Cediendo Stone (1992), and El Elevador (The Elevator, 1994), among many others. The exhibition also includes the work entitled Mesas de Trabajo (Working Tables, 1990-2000, Centre Georges Pompidou), a collection of found objects and mockups that represent ten years of experimentation motivated by Orozco's interest in working with found objects¿remnants that this artist transforms into works of art. After its presentation at the Georges Pompidou Centre, the exhibition will travel to the Tate Modern, where it will remain open until April of 2011.
