Abundant Futures

The Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary Foundation - TBA21, and the Centro de Creación Contemporánea de Andalucía - C3A, present until March 5, 2023, the exhibition "Futuros Abundantes" curated by Daniela Zyman, Artistic Director of TBA21.
The exhibition inaugurates the three-year (2022-2024) collaboration between TBA21, C3A, the Consejería de Cultura y Patrimonio Histórico de la Junta de Andalucía and the Ayuntamiento de Córdoba and celebrates the Foundation's 20-year trajectory at the Center. This large-scale exhibition covers more than 3,000 m2.
"Abundant Futures" brings together more than 40 works and commissions from the TBA21 Collection and will run in two phases, one in April and one in the fall.
Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza, president and founder of TBA21: "The theme of this exhibition is based on the gratitude we can feel in recognizing the abundance of the world around us, as opposed to the obsession with a scarcity driven by our consumer mentality, deeply ingrained in our DNA. Currently, I believe it is important to reevaluate everything in our lives, careers, passions, and relationships to transform them through art into existence of fulfillment and collaboration. In that sense, we at TBA21 are very grateful to the city of Córdoba and the Junta de Andalucía for giving us this three-year opportunity to look inward and, at the same time, develop outward. We are exploring boundaries, experimenting with methods that have taken time to develop, and applying them in this new location, which has an extraordinary history of inspiring tolerance for all."
The selection of works in the TBA21 collection creates a dialogue between a myriad of artistic visions and proposals, bringing together different generations of artists from multiple countries working in various media. The works include several works by Olafur Eliasson, such as the series of photographs "The Glacier Melt Series" (1999/2019; as well as a large garden installation titled "Reversed Waterfall" (1998). Asunción Molinos Gordo's recent series of sculptural works, "¡Cuánto río allá arriba!" (2021) and Regina de Miguel's paintings; among other works.
The exhibition also features works that are derived from recent commissions made through st_age, TBA21's digital platform. In addition, experimenting with concepts of ecological regeneration and community participation, there will be a long-term collaboration with the collective based in Córdoba, Plata.
"Abundant Futures" hopes to generate deep readings and reflections in collaboration with new voices invited to interact with artists and thinkers who have played a central role in these 20 years of TBA21. While focusing on the collection's thought-provoking narratives, the overall program developed in co-production with C3A will be activated with lectures, performances, installations, residencies, and public interventions by artists, practitioners, thinkers, and a multi-faceted public, creating a powerful hub for debate and thought.
Daniela Zyman, the curator, explains: "Abundant Futures is an exhibition essay that imagines ecological futures and worlds created from abundance and plenitude. Embracing abundance as the multiplying principle of life, it pays homage to the living environment, nourishes it, and what circulates and concentrates in it. While questioning the always limited and limiting promises of austerity, prosperity, and progress, the artists in the show explore how the abundance of possibilities should be cultivated and promoted socially. Abundant Futures, therefore, builds on the vital and unwavering principles of life itself while exploring regenerative, healing, and communal practices, across different scales."
