The exhibition, part of CCBB RJ's 35th anniversary celebrations, brings together nearly 300 works by more than 200 artists from all regions of Brazil. It offers an overview of the country's arts in the 1980s. With Raphael Fonseca as chief curator and Amanda Tavares and Tálisson Melo as assistant curators, the exhibition also includes elements of the visual culture of the period, such as magazines, brochures, album covers, and iconic objects, broadening the reflection on that period.
Fullgás, like Marina Lima's song, seeks to connect the public with a generation that poured much of its existential energy into artistic creation and new projects for the country and citizenship.
The exhibition will occupy the nine rooms on the second floor of the CCBB RJ, in addition to the rotunda. It will be divided into five conceptual nuclei, whose names are inspired by songs from the 1980s: "Que país é este" (1987), "Beat acelerado" (1985), "Diversões eletrônicas" (1980), "Pássaros na garganta" (1982) and "O tempo não para" (1988). In the CCBB rotunda, a work by Rio de Janeiro-based Pará artist Paulo Paes, composed of balloons, will be installed. "The balloon is an ephemeral object that evokes a festive question of color and movement," say the curators. Also, on the first floor, there will be a kiosk with magazines, vinyl records, books, and comics published at the time, as well as historical highlights that will allow the public to immerse themselves in the exhibition atmosphere.
"Fullgás —Visual Arts and the 1980s in Brazil" will include prominent names such as Adriana Varejão, Beatriz Milhazes, Daniel Senise, Leonilson, Luiz Zerbini, and Leda Catunda, among others, but also important artists from all regions of the country, such as Jorge dos Anjos, Kassia Borges Sérgio Lucena, Vitória Basaia, Raul Cruz, and many others.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog featuring photographs of the works and texts by curators and authors from various regions of Brazil. After its season at CCBB Rio de Janeiro, which will last until January 27, 2025, the exhibition will be presented at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil in Brasília from February 18 to April 27, 2025; at CCBB São Paulo from May 21 to August 4, 2025; and at CCBB Belo Horizonte from August 27 to November 17, 2025.
