Fuego amigo: Pía Camil Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil

On February 10th, the Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil (MACG) inaugurated the exhibition “Fuego amigo: Pía Camil" (Friendly Fire: Pía Camil), curated by Mauricio Marcin, who serves as the chief curator at MACG. This exhibition marks a milestone as the first retrospective dedicated to Camil's work in Mexico, encompassing her creations from the past two decades. The curation adopts a non-linear approach, breaking away from the typical chronological structure of retrospectives to present a conceptually circular or cyclical display, where the beginnings and endings of Camil's artistic production converge significantly.
Marcin emphasizes the collaborative nature inherent in Camil's work, which emerges within collectives that include seamstresses, writers, designers, and merchants. This practice challenges the traditional notion of art as the product of individual genius, instead promoting creation based on collaboration and reciprocity. Additionally, the exhibition addresses the critique of the Mexican economic model in Camil's work, highlighting the failure of free-market developmental models.
"Fuego amigo: Pía Camil" will be open to the public until April 14, 2024, at the Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil (MACG), located at Av. Revolución 1608, San Ángel, Álvaro Obregón, 01000 Mexico City, CDMX, Mexico.
