With a population of more than 10 million people, Wuhan is the main center of the political, economic, cultural and educational events in the central region of China. The Hubei Provincial Museum was established in 1953 and has become one of the best known cultural institutions in the country. It houses a collection of important historic relics. Following a change of address to its present location—at the edge of the Donghu Lake—in 1960, the museum has undergone several expansions in order to properly present national and international contemporary art exhibitions.
The Commissioner for the Latin American Pavilion at the 2013 Pingyao International Photography Festival, Alasdair Foster, announced that five of the exhibitions selected for the festival will be presented in October at the Hubei Provincial Museum. These five exhibitions were selected by the museum administration out of hundreds of artworks created by the 2,000 artists that participate in this year's edition of the festival. The selection will showcase the works of more than 20 contemporary artists working with photography, in a wide-ranging array of styles and narratives working within the festival's theme for this year: "Photography and Everyday Life: the Extraordinary within the Ordinary."
The exhibitions were curated by Gilma Suárez, Director of FotoMuseo, Museo Nacional de la Fotografía de Colombia; Nelson Ramírez de Arellano-Conde, Director at La Fototeca de Cuba of the Galería Nacional de Fotografía de Cuba; Cristina Chavarría, Cultural Affairs Director of La Fototeca and La Fototropía school in Guatemala; Patricia Mendoza, Executive Director of Zul Ediciones in Mexico City; and Sandro Oramas, President of the Centro Nacional de la Fotografía en Venezuela (CENAF).
Alasdair Foster will oversee the installation and production of the exhibitions and will present the artists and curators during the inaugural events. The 2013 Pingyao International Photography Festival will be held from September 19 through September 25 and the exhibitions at the Hubei Provincial Museum will remain open until the end of November of 2013.
