Fernell Franco: La vida es la calle (Life is the Street). Fundación Larivière

The exhibition of the Colombian photographer Fernell Franco (1942 - 2006) “La vida es la calle” (Life is the Street) will be on view at the Larivière Foundation's Hall 1 until September 15.
“La vida es la calle” (Life is the Street) highlights popular culture as a central factor in the imaginary of Latin American cities. For Franco, the street is the protagonist and his images narrate from a unique vision the urban life of provincial neighborhoods; places that are between the rural and the city, that exist within isolated customs and that are between development and ruin. In Cali, the city where Franco developed his work, between violence and the idea of modernity, myths and stories were generated that contributed to his work.
In his more than thirty-year career, the photographer managed to emphasize dark environments and at the same time festivities, the street as a meeting place for gangs, taverns, games and dances. He also traveled several times to Buenaventura where he generated links with different inhabitants, such as the prostitutes, he portrayed between 1971 and 1972. This series, one of his most recognized, was a pioneer in Latin America and he experimented formally with the image in the darkroom.
The works presented in this exhibition allow the visitor to see his most outstanding series and how photography can be understood beyond registry.
