Felipe Mujica

The exhibition "What were you thinking about, in the past or the future?" is the project with which the artist Felipe Mujica (Santiago de Chile, 1974) obtained the Fundación Actual MAVI Grant 2020, occupying two rooms of MAVI UC with twenty textiles produced with volunteers in an open workshop. The grant is an initiative of Fundación Actual in conjunction with MAVI UC and a project under the Cultural Donations Law. It is financed by Actualcorp and the Ministry of Culture, Arts, and Heritage through its Support Program for Collaborating Cultural Organizations.
"The exhibition title comes from an amusing anecdote at a soda fountain in Santiago, Chile. While it is not necessary to explain this anecdote, it can be said that it is an open question that can be rethought from the migratory experience," says artist Felipe Mujica. He moved from Chile to the United States more than two decades ago.
The people who participated in the production of the canvases in the exhibition were contacted through neighborhood organizations, community centers, and organizations that support migrants in Santiago, emphasizing residents of the Recoleta district. The idea was that the production workshop would become a space for exchanging knowledge. This workshop, open to people of all ages, genders, and textile experiences, is a process of horizontal production, collective work, and self-education, with those who participated guiding each other, expanding, and extrapolating the textile work to a scale never worked before. The workshop was carried out with the invaluable support of Myriam Luz, an embroiderer from El Barrero, Huechuraba, and the assistance of Carolina Urzúa, a recent graduate of the PUC School of Art.
MAVI UC is open from Tuesday to Sunday, between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm, at Lastarria 307, Santiago. It can be visited without prior registration. The exhibition will be on view until November 6, 2022.
