Kunsthalle Lissabon presents Tactiles, the first solo show in Portugal by the Costa Rican artist Federico Herrero.
Tactiles is a site-specific painting in which the architectural structures and the artist’s practice emerge spontaneously with the colors from the space itself, inserting landscapes within landscapes and creating something that appears to have always been there. Herrero captures the fragmented and multifaceted nature of urban landscapes in a few elements, depicting a precise moment and conveying a unique sense of duration, including its continuous evolution and its adaptation to external factors.
Herrero is known for his colorful and playable site paintings; his research hides its roots in urbanism and the accurate observation of landscapes, cities, and all the shapes and colors that inhabit them. Being influenced by the figures of everyday life, the artist embraces the freedom in which colors, forms, and culture collide to create a language free from sketches and ideas. However, in Herrero’s research, nothing is left to chance as he begins by following a feeling to build visual poetry influenced by abstract expressionism, often reaching a monumental approach.
Federico Herrero (1978, San José) lives and works in San Jose. He received the Young Artist’s Prize at the 49th Venice Biennale (2001). His work is in the permanent collection of numerous institutions, including the Tate Modern, London, UK; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, Spain; and the Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY.
