Contemporary Art Exhibition and Competition: The Unpublished Trajectory. Looking at the World Anew

The call for projects to participate in the Contemporary Art Contest opened in March 2021, La Trayectoria Inédita / Mirar al Mundo de Nuevo (The Unpublished Trajectory / Looking at the World Anew). In July, the exhibition opened at Hacienda La Trinidad Parque Cultural with the works of the 36 artists selected from 194 projects submitted. The competition and the show -which is still open- were possible thanks to the alliance established between the host institution and the Cultural Counseling of the Spanish Embassy in Venezuela. The intention: to celebrate the V centenary of the first circumnavigation of the globe.
Indeed, this initiative aims to tribute to that effort that took place 500 years ago, when Ferdinand Magellan and Juan Sebastian Elcano, lost in a long sea voyage, circumnavigated the world. The initial objective was to reach the islands of the Indonesian archipelago (today, the Moluccas Islands), where spices overflow. After three years of vicissitudes, with loss of life and ships, they finally arrived in Seville in 1522.
Lorena Gonzalez Inneco guided her curatorial work in a similar journey with this historical reference: inspired by the past. She organized the exhibition in "constellations" according to three conceptual axes: the 500 years ago world tour, the current Venezuela saw as a territory in confusion, and "the vicissitudes of the post-pandemic scenario."
In this journey, the resulting exhibition allowed, on the one hand, the coexistence of artists of different ages: from twenty to seventy-five years old, generating, as Lorena points out, an "unprecedented trajectory" that "went from being something circumstantial and individual to become a collective process, a spontaneous story where history and memory are mobilized, a place where the link with others and with the space around us is exalted." In this same space of coexistence, it was also possible the reunion between artists who have emigrated to other countries with those residing in the country.
The selection jury was made up by Élida Salazar, Gerardo Zavarce, Silvia Fuentes, José Luis García R. and the general curator, Lorena González, determined in their deliberation to accept the works of Génesis Alayón, María Elena Álvarez, Manuela Armand, Rafael Arteaga, Elisabetta Balasso, Muu Blanco, Antonio Briceño, Corina Briceño & Rodolfo Graziano, Amalia Caputo, Elizabeth Cemborain, Isabel Cisneros, Costanza De Rogatis, Estudios Animales, Manuel Eduardo González, Zahira González, Javier Grajales, Amada Granado, Cristian Guardia, Pedro Medina, Emilio Narciso, Nela Ochoa, Dianora Pérez-Montilla, María Virginia Pineda, Wilkellys Pirela, Lucía Pizzani, Siul Rasse, Raúl Rodríguez, Salomé Rojas, Lubeshka Suárez, Vasco Szinetar, Lihie Talmor, Analy Trejo, Efraín Ugueto, Eduardo Vargas Rico, Javier Vivas and José Vívenes.
Finally, the jury, made up of Magdalena Fernández, Tahía Rivero and Félix Suazo, awarded First Prize to José Vívenes; Second Prize to Génesis Alayón and Third Prize to Raúl Rodríguez. Three honorable mentions were also awarded to María Virginia Pineda, Salomé Rojas and Rafael Arteaga.
