Retrospective exhibition at MARCO of the marcelaygina collective

The exhibition “Nos gustaría contestar algunas preguntas: colectivo marcelaygina 1997-2010” (We would like to answer some questions: marcelaygina collective 1997-2010) will be inaugurated on October 21 at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey (MARCO). This exhibition was curated by Michele Fiedler and offers a journey through the Marcelaygina collective artistic production, integrated by Mexican artists Marcela Quiroga and Gina Arizpe. The exhibition brings together installation, documentation, object works of art, sketches, and records of performances.
Since the late 1990s, the work of the Marcelaygina collective has focused on exploring the use of the body as an artistic tool to question the stereotyped image of women made up by the patriarchal system. Likewise, they have explored themes such as social inequality and the context of the border between Mexico and the United States. The exhibition at MARCO proposes a chronological curatorship, divided into four thematic axes: Mediation of the self-image (1997-2001), Performativity of feminine aesthetics (2001-2004), The exit of the body and the entrance of the object (2004-2005) and Dynamics of the border (2006-2010).
It should be noted that this exhibition is part of a cycle dedicated to women artists, created by MARCO "with the aim of highlighting their production." This exhibition at MARCO is the second retrospective exhibition of marcelaygina collective, the first organized by the Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil in Mexico City in 2010, under the name “Check Point” and curated by Taiyana Pimentel.
