Retrospective Exhibition "Five Decades in a Spiral" by Magali Lara

The Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC) presents Cinco décadas en espiral (Five Decades in a Spiral), a retrospective exhibition of Mexican artist Magali Lara. This exhibition offers a unique look at Lara’s artistic journey, organized in reverse order, taking the viewer through different stages of her artistic evolution, from her most recent murals to her early drawings from the 1970s.
Over more than fifty years of career, Magali Lara has been a key figure in feminist art in Latin America, addressing themes such as fragility, everyday violence, sensuality, and the female experience. Her work spans various disciplines, including painting, drawing, animation, objects, and graphic design, merging writing, the body, and the plant world into a unique visual language.
The exhibition uses the spiral, a symbolic figure of continuous growth, as a framework for exploring her work. Five Decades in a Spiral brings together a series of murals, artist books, photographic interventions, and ceramic pieces, all created specifically for this show. The exhibition highlights the relationship between the large and the small, the visible and the hidden—recurring themes that have defined Lara's conceptual and aesthetic development.
The exhibition will be open to the public from April 5 to October 19, 2025, in rooms 1, 2, and 3 of the MUAC, Av. Insurgentes Sur 3000, C.U., Coyoacán, 04510 Mexico City.
