An updated and re-focused version of the show "EXPO 1: New York", held through September at MoMA PS1 and WW Dome 2, is open starting on December 17th. "EXPO 1: Rio" is presented in collaboration with Volkswagen do Brasil and will remain open through February 23rd, 2014. The exhibition has at its conceptual basis an analysis of the complex interactions between ecology and economy, confronted with the consequences of the drastic changes that have revolutionized society in recent years. Recent ecological challenges respond to innovations in the fields of industry and production, connected to shifts in social and political balances.
The original idea for EXPO 1 was developed by Jlaus Biesenbach and Hans Ulrich Obrist I the show that dealt with the specific issue of climate change though the example of Hurricane Sandy, which so impacted the New York area. For the Brazil show, MAM Rio curator Luiz Camillo Osorio selected, working with other curators, the work of contemporary Brazilian artists who engage the city of Rio de Janeiro's current social and political climate. Among them: Jarbas Lopes, Jonathas de Andrade, Thiago Rocha Pitta, Claudia Andujar, Rivane Neuenschwander, and Cao Guimarães.
International-grade spectacles, such as well-publicized sports events, are confronted with infrastructure gaps and social needs. The Rio Carnival is a clear example, as it is p[resented as the prologue fo the FIFA World Cup and, two years later, the Olympic Games. Preparations for these massive events are happening in parallel and present a strongcontrasts with the rallies and protests against the political class and the police, expressions of a disconformity among the people with the authoritarian impositions involved in the process.
Among other outstanding works, there are entries by Matthew Barney, Joseph Beuys, Halil Altindere, Igor Grubic, and a tribute to the recently deceased Egyptian artist Amal Lenawy, whose work combines artistic practice with her social responsibility as a citizen. The exhibition closes with Cinthia Macelle's iconic video 475 volver, where a centipede slowly buries itself in a deforested area of central Brazil, in an unendig loop action.
In future sites for EXPO 1, scheduled for various cities around the world, the show will continue to deal with local urban environments and the unbridled growth of the economy in connection with global ecological changes.
