After the resignation of Agustín Pérez Rubio as Director of the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla-León (MUSAC) on January 31st, 2013, after almost four years at the post, the Castilla-León culture counselor, Alicia García, presented Eva González-Sancho Bodero as the institution's new director. She is the third person on the position since MUSAC's inauguration in 2005.
González-Sancho was selected by a committee that includes José Guirao, director of Casa Encendida; Víctor del Río, professor of Artistic Theories of Modernity and Theory of Contemporary Art at the University of Salamanca's School of Fine Arts; Luis Grau, Director of the Museo Provincial de León; and José Ramón Alonso Peña, Director of Cultural Policy for the autonomous government of Castilla-León.
She was selected from a pool of 28 candidates thanks to her recognized trajectory as curator of numerous exhibitions, as well as her experience as Director and curator of the Frac Bourgogne (Fonds Régional d'Art Contemporain in Dijon, France), between 2003 and 2011, and of the Etablissement d'en face projects, an art-projects office in Brussels, between 1998 and 2003. González-Sancho has taught History of the Art Exhibit at the University of Metz between 2001 and 2004, and until her nomination at MUSAC she was part of the curatorial team for LIAF, Lofoten International Art Festival, in Norway. She has curated exhibitions in France and other countries, and she has participated in the structuring of collections for the Frac Bourgogne, which includes artists like Francis Alÿs, Jordi Colomer, and Marcelo Cidade.
The new Director of MUSAC, whose term will be of four years, faces the challenge of a severely curtailed budget due to the country's generalized financial crisis. She will seek to focus on the internationalization of the museum, saying that "the idea is to work abroad, presenting works from our permanent collection internationally" to enhance connections with other museums and consolidate a collaborative strategy that will allow MUSAC to achieve a balance between local, national, and international artists.
