Eugenio Viola. Curador

Eugenio Viola, the Chief Curator of Bogota’s Museo de Arte Moderno, has been appointed as curator of the Italian Pavilion during the Venice Art Biennale, which will open on April 23, 2022. “It’s for me a great honor and a privilege. I will work with the highest commitment, ethically, aware of the responsibility of the prestigious assignment that has been entrusted to me,” Viola commented on his appointment.
Italy’s Minister of Culture, Dario Franceschini, said, “Viola is the bearer of a creative, ambitious and innovative vision, capable of thoroughly investigating the changes triggered by the pandemic in the country and the world.”
Viola was the Estonian Pavilion’s curator in the Venice Biennial in its 56 edition (Jaanus Samma, Not Suitable For Work. A Chairman’s Tale, Palazzo Malipiero, Venice). The exhibition traveled to the Museum of the Occupations in Tallinn in 2016.
Born in Naples, Italy, he is a curator and art critic. He received his Ph.D. in “Methods and Methodologies of Archaeological and Historical-Artistic Research” at the University of Salerno and specialized in the experiences and theories related to performance and bodily poetics. On this subject, Viola edited monographs devoted to Marina Abramović (Sole 24 Ore Cultura, Milan, 2012), Regina Jose Galindo (Skira, Milan, 2014), and ORLAN (Charta, Milan- New York, 2007), among others.
He worked as a curator at the Museo d'Arte Contemporanea DonnaRegina - MADRE (Naples) from 2009 to 2016. From 2017 to 2019, he was Chief Curator at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts - PICA. He has been recognized twice in 2016 and 2019 as the best Italian curator by Artribune magazine.
