The exhibition “Estudio. Nijolė Šivickas” is on view at the Sala Carlos Rojas of the Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá (MAMBO) until October 6.
The retrospective curated by Eugenio Viola and Juaniko Moreno is the first exhibition dedicated to the Lithuanian-Colombian artist after her death. It brings together more than 150 works created over seven decades of artistic career, some never exhibited, and a selection of previously unpublished archival materials, creating a testimony of Šivickas' artistic legacy and the most comprehensive exhibition to date.
“Studio” is curated in a way that challenges the conventional museum experience by exhibiting the artist's world, presenting sections of her home and, as its title mentions, her studio. The works establish a connection between the viewer and the artist, recreating her environment by highlighting the creative process in the artist's work, as well as enabling an immersive experience in what was Šivickas' daily life.
As the exhibition is so wide-ranging, there are paintings and drawings from her studies at the Stuttgart Academy in Germany, as well as series of paintings shown for the first time. Likewise, it is possible to appreciate figurative sculptures from the mid-seventies and informalist sculptures where tradition and abstract style converge. Therefore, several plastic languages and materials such as ceramics, metals, wood, stone, among others, are displayed.
