Cuban artist Esterio Segura unveiled Goodbye My Love in one of Times Square's underground walkways.
This installation, comprised of twelve airplanes created from heart-shaped objects hanging from the ceiling, is a symbol of the way in which, in contemporary relationships, our loved ones are far away.
Segura explains that up to now, expressions of this subject "have been sad and pessimistic," while his installation teases out "an optimistic point of view pointing to the importance of good communications and the interaction between cultures caused by this circumstance," as he said in a communiqué.
The installation, intended by the artist to call our attention to the distance the modern world sometimes imposes on people who love each other, is located in "Anita's Way," the busy Times Square pedestrian walkway connecting 43rd Street with Sixth Avenue. Segura's work was presented at the Havana Biennial in 2012, and its presence at the heart of New York City "gives greater visibility to this important emerging artist" according to Times Square Alliance, the organization in charge of events programming for this symbolic New York location.
