The exhibition "Esteban Lisa. Cosmovisión del color" presents a selection of fifty-six works created between 1954 and 1977 by Esteban Lisa (Toledo, 1895 - Buenos Aires, 1983), a pioneer artist of Latin American abstraction. The exhibition will be on view at Casa de América from March 24 to May 26, 2023.
Since the 1980s, Lisa's figure and work have gone from almost absolute ignorance to a posthumous but continuous public exposure; this has been due to the celebration of solo and group exhibitions that have explored the phenomenon of the Latin American avant-garde and the abstract movement. Already in his small landscapes and figurative still lifes, Lisa explored the possibilities of representation through geometric compositions, evolving from early abstractions derived from cubism to the expressionist lyricism of his latest works.
An artist of limited financial means, he worked mainly with oil on paper and cardboard, often using them on both sides. More than showing his artistic work, which he kept and never wanted to exhibit or sell, Lisa was concerned with educating disciples. In addition to being an artist, he taught painting and drawing.
The works that make up the exhibition "Esteban Lisa. Cosmovisión del color" belong to the series Actos espaciales (1954-1957) and Juegos de líneas y colores (1959-1978), works in which the sophisticated use of color stands out and which incorporate a complex set of symbols, strokes and compositional elements that break with any defined geometric structure. They could be qualified as a gestural abstraction.
