Escher, a Retrospective Exhibition

From April 29 to September 26, 2021 in the Sala Gran de les Drassanes Reials de Barcelona of the Museu Marítim de Barcelona, the exhibition "Escher" will be presented.
Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) is known as a creator of figures, impossible worlds, and optical illusions. The exhibition brings together more than 200 original works, a retrospective of Escher's enigmatic sketches and paradoxical designs, beginning with his early engravings and realistic drawings inspired by nature and landscape. The exhibition explores M. C. Escher's work around tessellation and the transformation of figures illustrating how metamorphosis became a unique element of his art, combining fantasy and geometry. In the development of his mathematical research, Escher created inexhaustible images executed with an attention to detail and precision, with the depiction of infinity in his most famous works. Among them are those produced during his surrealist period. The exhibition has been curated by Mark Veldhuysen, CEO of the MC Escher Company, and Federico Giudiceandrea, Italian collector and expert on the artist.
The international scientific community recognizes the work of M. C. Escher as a symbol of the interrelationship between art and science. Although his knowledge of mathematics was mainly visual and intuitive, Escher played with architecture and perspective to invent infinite worlds.
This exhibition is presented in Barcelona thanks to the agreement between Consorci de les Drassanes Reials, Museu Marítim de Barcelona, and Arthemisia - Evolucionarte, and the collaboration of The MC Escher Foundation.
