A native of New Castle, Pennsylvania, Shiner obtained a B.A. in Art History and Architecture and in Japanese Language and Literature from the University of Pittsburgh, and later a M.A. in Art History from the University of Osaka. During his last semester in Osaka, Shiner worked with the curatorial department at the National Modern Art Museum, in Kyoto, collaborating closely with its chief curator Shinji Kohmoto, who became his mentor. Shiner was named Director of the Andy Warhol museum earlier this year after Thomas Sokolowski resigned from the post after 14 years. Besides his Museum duties, Shiner is an active writer, professor, and translator, as well as a contributing editor for the Asia Pacific art journal and an adjunct professor in Art History at the University of Pittsburgh.
