Alfredo Sosabravo, recognized with the ¿Merit Order of the Italian Republic¿

The Cuban artist Alfredo Sosabravo, national Price of Plastic Arts for the work of his life, was decorated with the knight (Cavaliere) grade of the ¿Merit Order of the Italian Republic¿, during a ceremony the last June 1st, at this embassy in Cuba. According to what this diplomatic institution announced, the distinction is ¿destined to reward the achievements obtained through the Italian nation in the fields of the literature, arts, economy and the performance of public jobs and activities aimed at social, philanthropic and humanitarian purposes, also for long and signed services in civil and military careers. This decoration is awarded by the Italian President, followed by a board compounded by one chancellor and sixteen members¿. The artistic career of Alfredo Sosabravo (Sagua La Grande, Cuba, 1930), has been very linked to Italy. He has exhibited there in several occasions, in personal and group exhibitions. In 1976 he won the Gold medal in the XXXIV International Concourse of Ceramic of Contemporary Art of Faenza. With the technical support of masters of the manufacture Ars Murano, from Venice, he has made sculpture works in glass, considered a novel in the tradition of this renamed place. Others have been molten in bronze by the Fundizione Bonvicini, from Verona. Sosabravo was invited to participate in the Biennial of Ceramic of Contemporary Arts of Albissola Mare with pieces made in San Giorgio da Poggi¿s workshop, where his fellow Wilfredo Lam made the greatest part of his ceramic production. And with the help of young students convoked by the International Civil Service, also Sosabravo painted in Italian cities the two mural La Guerra y la paz y Liberación (The war and the peace and the liberation).
