"Entre dos Mundos" by Artist José Bedia

One of the most important artists of the so called ¿eighties generation¿ in Cuba, José Bedia will be exhibiting his work at the Institut Valencià d'Art Modern (Valencian Institute of Modern Art). Entitled Entre Dos Mundos (Between Two Worlds), the exhibition will be presented by IVAM's Director, Consuelo Císcar, the Curator of the exhibition, Isabel Durán, and by Bedia himself. It will include a total of 19 drawings created with acrylic and oil pastels and framed by an anthropological approach that attempts a journey from the past to the present through nature, technology, and humanity, in order to combine reality with fiction. Bedia's work centers on a critical and anthropological treatment of peoples and cultures that in most cases are ancient in origin. Many of his works draw from the Afro-Cuban traditions still practiced in the island, and from the study of¿and work with¿Amerindian cultures like the Sioux, Yaqui, Cherokee, or others found in Latin America, Australia, and Oceania. More specifically, Entre Dos Mundos is based on Bedia's experiences in Mexico¿after leaving Cuba¿where he had the opportunity to live among an indigenous community that still practices Pre-Columbian techniques to make the handmade paper known as amate, which is used for the drawings presented in this exhibit. His images combine his ¿connection to Pre-Columbian culture¿ with his ¿knowledge about Afro-Cuban traditions.¿ Entre Dos Mundos will be exhibited until November 21 of this year.
