Transatlantic Encounters: Avant-Garde Discourses in Spain and Latin America.

The Centro de Ciencias Humanas y Sociales (CSIC), along with the Department of Arts and Humanities of Saint Louis University, Madrid; the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros; and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, announce the call to participate in the international congress Transatlantic Encounters: Avant-Garde Discourses in Spain and Latin America.

Proposals to participate (500 words) must be submitted accompanied by the applicant's Curriculum Vitae (no more than two pages long), by e-mail to: Paula Barreiro-López at paula.barreiro@cchs.csic.es. The deadline to submit all proposals is February 28, 2013.

A limited number of participants will be granted economic support to help cover their traveling expenses, provided that the requests are reasonable and subjected to the approval of the scientific committee. In the event that a request is accepted, the candidate must submit a reasoned petition explaining the candidate's suitability and the lack of other means of economic support from the institution of origin to cover the traveling expenses.

The international congress Transatlantic Encounters: Avant-Garde Discourses in Spain and Latin America (July 11-13, 2013), explores the artistic and intellectual exchange between Spain and Latin America, framed by the current mission of the Museo Reina Sofía to become a referent for Latin American art in Europe and its commitment to showcase "peripheral" or "alternative" modernities. The proposal also aims at contributing to the activities developed in connection to the exhibition entitled The Concrete Invention: Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros (Museo Reina Sofía, from January 23 to September 16, 2013). Thus, the studies and debates here proposed participate in the reformulation of the historiography and dominant discourses of the modernism and modernity that the museum has promoted through its exhibitions, public programs and publications.

The congress seeks to reflect on the "notion" of avant-garde as it pertains to the experience and the discourse of the modernity proposed between the decades of 1920s and 1970s. The development of a political and aesthetic avant-garde in the context of the first and second vanguards (or neo-vanguards), along with the role that the exchanges between Spain and Latin America had in the creation and construction of such notion, will be the guiding threads for the reflection in the event. Through conferences and communications, the various sessions present the most up-to-date research in order to contribute to a better understanding of the relationships and exchanges between Spain and Latin America.

Spanish will be the official language of the conference, although English will be also accepted during the interventions. The scientific committee will announce the results on March 25 of 2013.
