As part of the retrospective exhibition of Doris Salcedo (Bogotá, 1958) at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, the institution prepares a symposium on Friday, October 2, from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm. The event will include the participation of academics and writers who will join Salcedo in an interdisciplinary discussion that will address a wide range of subjects in connection to her artistic practice. The program will touch on the history of art, literature, philosophy, psychoanalysis and critical theory, and will conclude with a reception and visit to the exhibition. Some of the participants are: Elizabeth Adam, associate professor of Art History at California Polytechnic State University.; Carlos Basualdo, curator of the Keith L. and Katherine Sachs Contemporary Art Galleries at the Philadelphia Museum of Art; Katherine Brinson, curator of Contemporary Art at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and curator of the Doris Salcedo exhibition; Leslie Jamison, assistant professor in Writing at Columbia University; Roderick Mengham, reader in English literature and curator at Jesus College of the University of Cambridge; Jean-Luc Nancy, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel chair at the European Graduate School; Alexander Nemerov, chair of the Department of Art and Art History at Stanford University; and Doris Salcedo. Admission tickets will be $15 USD for the general public and $10 for members; free student tickets with prior reservation. The retrospective exhibition by Doris Salcedo at the Guggenheim Museum will remain open to the public until October 12, 2015. Other events will be organized at the same time, such as the daily projection of a documentary from 11:00 am to 5:30 pm at the Theatre Museum about public works in places like the Plaza Bolivar in Bogota and the Tate Modern in London, created by Salcedo during the last 15 years. A guided tour of the exhibition led by curator Katherine Brinson will take place on September 11 at 12:00 pm. The tour will also be interpreted in American sign language. The tour is free with museum admission. The exhibition by Doris Salcedo was organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and curated by Madeleine Grynsztejn and Julie Rodrigues Widholm, with support from curatorial assistant Steven L. Bridges. The presentation at the Solomon R. Guggenheim was curated by Katherine Brinson, with support from assistant curator Susanne Thompson.
