Museo Nacional de Colombia inaugurated “Trabar la lengua”

The Museo Nacional de Colombia inaugurated “Trabar la lengua, una exposición para hablar de arte en Colombia (1954-1985)”. The exhibition delves into how mass media—radio and television—played a crucial role from the fifties onwards in establishing a modernist discourse about art in the country. The exhibition was made possible through an agreement with RTVC and the support of HJCK.
As Jaime Cerón, Head of the Art Curatorship at the Museum, explains, “‘Trabar la lengua’ examines how a particular way of talking about art in the country was established through radio, television, and print media. This approach favored certain aspects of artistic work while disregarding others, leading to the social valuation of some artists over others, while concealing art movements that did not align with that perspective.'
The exhibition is divided into three curatorial axes: 'Public media and their formative processes in art,' 'Printed media and exhibitions,' and 'Pedagogical practices at the National Museum of Colombia.' These three sections will feature archival material, television programs from the era, and radio interviews. Additionally, the exhibition includes works from the National Museum of Colombia's collection that are referenced in the television and radio segments integrated into the exhibition.
The exhibition will have a second phase inaugurated in 2024 under the title 'Unlocking the discourse,' focusing on the period from 1985 to 2004."
