Sofia Torres Kosiba: Bravaria at Museo Moderno Buenos Aires
The Museo Moderno presents "Bravaria," the first solo exhibition by Sofia Torres Kosiba (Córdoba, Argentina, 1974), in a museum in Buenos Aires. Raúl Flores curated the show, and it will be on view until July 31, 2023.
For this exhibition, the artist from Córdoba created a fictional world that mixes humor, eroticism, an atmosphere of fairy tales and gothic stories, and violence in a space that recreates between a game room and a necropolis, which materializes the limit between beauty and horror that hides in everyday life.
Bravaria is a devastated territory where the ruined architecture contrasts with the organic forms and beings that inhabit it. A group of sculptures brings together characters such as cement, iron, and foam rubber workers, inhabitants that become monuments of the fantastic realm. For its part, a video performance presents the artist embodying The Bird Woman, sovereign of Bravaria; her dialogue with the birds refers to the public space and their past as statues, which plays between concepts such as tenderness and terror.
In 2019, Sofia Torres Kosiba presented "Bravaria. El Reino Inexistente" at Espacio Cultural Museo de las Mujeres (Córdoba, Argentina), in which she began her inquiry into the idea and construction of "a kingdom in Córdoba," influenced by the hypothetical visit to the city of the Spanish royalty on the International Congress of the Language. Torres Kosiba explained, "(...) suddenly I was surrounded by information about queens, kings, and courts. All these situations appeared to me to be antagonistic and of strong symbolic power concerning our South American condition. I was very interested in the way of sustaining the symbolic power of the great Western powers. And how from the monument that becomes a souvenir, an identity and a culture are built. It seems to me totally crazy."
