From October 27, 2022, through March 26, 2023, El Museo del Barrio presents DOMESTICANX, an exhibition curated by Susanna V. Temkin. The show brings together seven artists from different generations who contemplate healing, spirituality, decoration, and the home.
The exhibition is inspired by the concept of "domesticana," which approaches Rasquache culture from the experience of working-class women. This Chicana feminist proposal emerged in the 1990s as a response to heteronormative "rasquachismo." Therefore, the curatorship shapes contemporary Latin intersectionality by expanding the concept's terminology.
In this way, the exhibition explores the dialogues between home, family, self-formation, and spirituality as emancipatory spaces from contemporary queer, feminist and intersectional perspectives. The exhibition features different media: paintings, textiles, ceramics, and installations; and works by: Mesa-Bains, Nitza Tufiño, María Brito, Amarise Carreras, Cielo Félix-Hernández, Joel Gaitán, and Misla. Drawing from different origins, genres, and generations, the seven artists seek to "undo the wounds of patriarchy and colonization".
