The Museo de Arte Moderno de México (MAM) brings together more than thirty-five works, including sketches, diaries, photos, paintings, and drawings, in the exhibition "Remedios Varo: Disruption of the Real", which will be on view until March 19th.
It is impossible to talk about Surrealism without referring to Varo; her works explore mysticism, science, magic, and even esotericism. Her work seems to be a syncretism between European painters such as El Bosco, El Greco, and Goya, along with mythological features and medieval architecture. This exhibition is an opportunity to see many of her works in one place. Intending to bring the public closer to an overview of Remedios Varo, the Museo de Arte Moderno de México gathered works such as La creación de las aves (The Creation of the Birds) (c. 1957) together with its sketches to present not only the most important works of the surrealist artist but also of her artistic processes.
The exhibition also includes Varo's original correspondence to Edward James, one of the promoters of Surrealism in Mexico, and to Wolggang Paalen, a great exponent of this artistic movement. Varo's personal objects are part of the exhibition, complementing the painter's work.
