The Shanghai Museum of Art announces the 5th Shanghai Biennial 2004, led by curator Sebastian Lopez.

The Shanghai Biennial will open its doors on September 28 and will remain open to the public until November 28, 2004. For the first time, the curatorial team will be led by a Latin American curator, Sebastián López, art historian and curator of Argentinean origin, who is currently the Director of the Gate Foundation in Amsterdam. The rest of the team includes Xu Jiang, Director of the Chinese Art Academy in Hangzhou; Zheng Shengtian, independent curator, and Zhang Qing, contemporary art curator at the Shanghai Museum of Art. Considered as one of the most crucial points for the discussion on contemporary art, the main topic will be ¿The techniques of the visible¿. Other subjects such as the relation established between art, science and technology, and the connections between art and social forces as well as in culture within contemporary politics will be explored through the artworks and theoretical encounters. The Biennial will show the contemporary creation through filmmaking, photography, video, installations and performances. Premiering in China a significant presentation of Latin American Art alongside the art from Asia, Africa, Europe and North America, will take place.
